Drainage Engineer Jobs UK – CCTV Surveyor & Jetting Vacancies
Commercial drainage, CCTV WRc survey, high-pressure jetting & confined space roles for FM contractors.
Commercial drainage engineers maintain and repair drainage infrastructure for facilities management contractors, local authorities, and water utilities. Core work includes CCTV drain surveys coded to WRc specification, high-pressure water jetting, root cutting, lining, and excavation-based repairs. Many roles require confined space certification and a full driving licence for mobile reactive work.
Key employers: The drainage sector is dominated by specialist contractors — Lanes Group, GreenRidge Group, Jet Aire Services, Dyno-Rod, and Drainclear — alongside FM prime contractors (Mitie, Amey) that include drainage within bundled hard-FM contracts. Water utility framework contracts with Thames Water, Severn Trent, and Yorkshire Water generate significant volume in the South East, Midlands, and Yorkshire respectively.
Qualifications: NADC Certified Drain Surveyor (or equivalent WRc-accredited qualification) is required for most CCTV survey roles. High-pressure jetting operators typically need Water Jetting Association (WJA) cards. NRSWA Street Works qualifications are required for any work in the highway. Confined Space Certification (EUSR or equivalent) is standard for most reactive drainage contracts. For CCTV survey roles, the distinction between WinCan/PACP coding (US-origin) and WRc manual coding to MSCC5 is important — most UK FM contracts specify MSCC5, and surveyors who can code to both standards are more competitive in salary negotiations.
Regional premium: London and the South East pay a significant premium driven by basement construction, sewer flood risk projects, and Thames Water framework work. HGV Class 2 tanker drivers are in shortage nationwide, commanding £2,000–£5,000 above base-grade van operative rates in most regions.
Subcontract day rates: CCTV surveyors typically earn £220–£290/day on subcontract; jetting operatives £180–£240/day. Survey managers overseeing multi-van operations earn £350–£450/day on short-term project work.
Career progression: Van operative → CCTV surveyor → survey manager → contracts/operations manager. Engineers moving into survey management can progress to regional director roles within 8–10 years, particularly at national contractors with structured management development programmes.
Salary benchmarks: Drainage operatives earn £22,000–£30,000. Engineers with jetting and survey experience reach £28,000–£40,000. Experienced CCTV surveyors with WRc MSCC5 coding competency typically earn £35,000–£50,000. Tanker drivers with HGV Class 2 licences command a premium on top of base rates, particularly in London and the South East.
