What does a commercial pest control technician do?

Commercial pest control technicians manage rodent, insect and bird activity across offices, food production sites, warehouses, hospitals, schools and retail environments. The work splits between a scheduled contract round — routine inspection visits, bait station monitoring, insect monitor replacement, documentation — and reactive call-outs when a client reports activity. Proofing works to block entry points are increasingly part of the role rather than a separate trade.

Most roles are mobile and involve lone working across a fixed portfolio of sites, typically 6–10 visits a day within a defined patch. Food-sector sites carry the heaviest documentation burden because pest control records are audited under BRCGS and similar standards, so accurate reporting matters as much as the treatment itself.

Qualifications: RSPH Level 2 and beyond

The RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management is the industry standard entry qualification and the one employers screen on. Beyond it, senior technician and technical surveyor roles expect experience running integrated pest management (IPM) programmes, and BPCA membership is common at company level. Many employers also want a full driving licence, a fumigation qualification for specific sectors, and increasingly a 18th Edition or general FM ticket for multi-skilled contracts.

Career path: technician → senior technician → technical surveyor or field biologist → contract manager. The surveyor route is the technical ladder and pays better than supervision for most people; it involves auditing sites, writing IPM specifications and handling escalated infestations rather than running a round.

Salary benchmarks

Technician salaries typically range from £26,000–£36,000, with experienced surveyors earning £38,000–£48,000. London and the South East add roughly 10–20%. Company van, fuel card and a call-out rota allowance are close to standard and can add several thousand to the real package, so compare total compensation rather than base.

Key employers: the national pest control specialists — Rentokil, Mitie Pest Control, Ecolab, SafeGuard and Cleankill — alongside regional independents and the in-house teams at tier-1 FM contractors. Regional firms often give broader technical exposure earlier; the nationals offer more structured progression and funded training.
