Fire & Security Engineer Jobs UK
BS 5839 fire alarm, suppression, emergency lighting, CCTV, access control & intruder detection roles.
Fire and security engineers install, commission, and maintain life safety and security systems in commercial buildings — fire detection and alarm systems (BS 5839-1), suppression systems, emergency lighting, CCTV, access control, and intruder detection. Work is typically split between planned preventive maintenance (PPM) visits and reactive call-outs, with on-call requirements on critical-infrastructure contracts.
Employer landscape: The sector is served by a mix of national specialist contractors (Chubb, ADT, Gunnebo, Johnson Controls Tyco) and FM prime contractors that deliver integrated hard-FM services (Mitie, ISS, Securitas, Sodexo). Tier-1 FM primes increasingly bundle fire and security under a single engineering contract, creating roles where engineers hold competency across both disciplines. Regional independent installers dominate mid-market commercial and retail work outside London.
Qualifications: BS 5839-1 Level 3 is the benchmark for fire alarm engineers in commercial FM. The 2017+A1:2019 revision tightened ongoing PPM requirements, driving sustained demand for competent engineers who understand the updated cause-and-effect programming rules. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) is the base statutory driver for all fire system maintenance obligations. NSI Gold scheme accreditation (company level) commands a premium over Silver, particularly on NHS and government contracts where Gold is frequently specified. Security engineers working on CCTV and access control increasingly require SIA licensing.
Subcontract and day-rate market: Fire alarm commissioning engineers can earn £200–£300/day as subcontractors, with CCTV commissioning specialists typically fetching £250–£350/day on short-term project work. London Tier 1 contractor rates run 15–25% above regional independent installer rates, reflecting the city premium and NSI Gold requirement on most commercial refurbishment projects.
Career progression: Installation apprentice → commissioning engineer → senior engineer → regional contracts manager → technical director. Engineers who qualify to design systems (LPS 1014-registered designers) can move into a consultancy or project management track, with salaries reaching £65,000–£80,000+ on complex multi-site programmes.
Salary benchmarks: Experienced fire and security engineers earn £32,000–£48,000. Senior roles on critical infrastructure contracts — data centres, hospitals, and government buildings — pay £50,000–£65,000+. Engineers holding both fire alarm and security systems competencies command a premium over single-discipline specialists.
