Commercial grounds maintenance engineers maintain the external environments of office parks, retail centres, hospitals, schools, and public sector estates. Work covers grass cutting, hedge trimming, seasonal planting, hard landscape maintenance, and winter gritting schedules. Roles range from grounds operatives on single large sites to mobile supervisors managing multiple client contracts across a region.

FM landscaping differs significantly from garden centre or domestic horticulture. Commercial grounds teams work to strict service-level agreements, maintain asset registers for hard and soft landscape features, and coordinate with site FM managers on seasonal programmes. Multi-site contracts with Mitie, ISS Facility Services, VINCI Facilities, and Cushman & Wakefield account for a large share of grounds maintenance vacancies, alongside local authority and NHS estates teams that generate consistent volume hiring.

PA1 and PA6 (NPTC certificates of competence) are required for pesticide and herbicide application — PA1 covers broadcast spraying equipment and PA6 covers hand-held knapsack sprayers. Both are assessed by NPTC at approved centres; engineers holding both can register on the BASIS FACTS database, a requirement for many local authority contracts. Many supervisory roles also expect a relevant Level 2 or Level 3 horticulture qualification (RHS, City & Guilds 0600) and a valid CSCS card.

Regional demand is strongest in the South East, where retail park and business park portfolios are densest, and in public sector programmes — NHS estates and council housing grounds maintenance generate large-volume recruitment rounds, particularly in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October).

Career progression typically runs: grounds operative → working supervisor → contracts manager → regional operations manager. Salaries range from £22,000–£28,000 for operatives to £30,000–£40,000 for experienced team leaders and contract supervisors.
