Gas Engineer Jobs UK – Commercial Gas Safe Vacancies
Permanent, contract & subcontract roles for ACS-qualified commercial gas engineers across the UK.
Commercial gas engineers install, service, and maintain gas-fired heating systems in offices, hospitals, retail parks, and industrial facilities. Unlike domestic gas work, commercial roles involve high-pressure pipework, plant room equipment, and large-scale boiler plant — often as part of a multi-discipline PPM contract for a Facilities Management company.
Qualifications: commercial ACS and Gas Safe
Gas Safe registration is mandatory for all gas work in the UK — carrying it out unregistered is a criminal offence under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. Competence is evidenced through ACS assessment, and commercial work sits on a different core from domestic: COCN1 is the commercial core, or CODNCO1 if you are changing over from the domestic core. Core alone authorises nothing — you add appliance categories for the specific plant you work on, such as commercial boilers, direct and indirect fired heaters, or catering appliances.
ACS certificates are valid for five years and must be reassessed to keep each category live on your card. Engineers holding additional tickets such as F-Gas Cat 1 or 18th Edition command the top of the range. Most employers also want a CSCS card and IPAF/PASMA for rooftop or elevated plant access.
Salary benchmarks and why gas pays most
Commercial gas engineers earn £38,000–£50,000 in FM, rising to £50,000–£62,000 at senior and lead level, with London and the South East adding roughly 15–25%. Gas Safe (ACS) carries the single largest certification uplift in facilities management — around £4,000–£7,000 a year. Subcontract day rates run £250–£380.
The premium is structural rather than cyclical. Entry requires a managed learning route or changeover plus separate assessments per appliance category, and every category needs reassessing every five years — so supply stays tight while demand is legally non-discretionary. Catering gas is particularly under-supplied relative to demand across hotels, hospitals, schools and stadiums.
Types of role: site-based engineers on long-term FM contracts, mobile engineers covering a regional patch of commercial sites, and specialist boiler-plant engineers on industrial installations. See the 2026 FM salary guide for full regional breakdowns and certification premiums.
