Water Hygiene Engineer Jobs UK – Legionella & L8 Vacancies

Permanent, contract & subcontract roles for legionella risk assessors, L8 water treatment technicians, TMV engineers, and cooling tower operatives.

What does a water hygiene engineer do?

Water hygiene engineers manage legionella and waterborne pathogen risk in commercial and public-sector buildings. The work is a repeating compliance cycle rather than reactive repair: monthly temperature checks on sentinel outlets, quarterly tank inspections, TMV servicing, showerhead descaling and disinfection, cooling tower treatment, and remedial chlorination when results fall outside limits.

The legal duty sits in ACoP L8, the HSE Approved Code of Practice, with HSG274 providing the technical method across three parts — evaporative cooling systems, hot and cold water systems, and other risk systems. Because the duty is legal and recurring, water hygiene contracts are among the most stable in hard FM.

Qualifications: L8, HSG274 and risk assessment

Operational engineers need L8-level water hygiene training, ideally City & Guilds accredited — awareness-level certificates will not satisfy an auditor for anyone carrying out monitoring or remedial work. Legionella risk assessors typically hold City & Guilds 6150 or BOHS P901/W001. Water treatment technicians often hold City & Guilds 6151, and cooling tower work calls for HSG274 Part 1 depth specifically.

Career path: water hygiene technician → engineer → legionella risk assessor → account or contract manager. The risk-assessor route is the technical ladder and generally pays better than supervision. Adding 18th Edition widens you into multi-skilled FM roles, since much of the plant is electrically controlled.

Salary benchmarks and employers

Salaries range from £28,000–£38,000 for technicians and engineers to £42,000–£55,000 for senior risk assessors and account managers. The L8 qualification itself is worth roughly £1,500–£3,000, but the larger effect is access — without documented competence you are excluded from these contracts entirely. Subcontract risk assessment typically pays £180–£280 a day.

Key employers: specialist water treatment companies such as Hydro-X, Aquachem, Veolia Water Technologies and Nalco, plus the in-house water teams at tier-1 FM contractors. Healthcare is the most demanding sector — augmented care areas carry requirements beyond HSG274 — while hotels, care homes and leisure sites are high-volume because of infrequently used outlets.
